Going green at home is becoming increasingly popular with consumers looking for “Green” and “Environmentally Friendly” labels on anything from detergent to grout cleaner. We love the enthusiasm for a more sustainable product! At Le Pain Quotidien, we use green products for all sorts of cleaning purposes because it’s better for the environment and better for our bodies. Natural cleaning products are free of harmful toxic materials and instead, rely on plant-based and other environmentally-friendly alternatives to combat bacteria, dirt, and grime.

How can you clean your home in an environmentally conscious way, you ask? With the green trend on the rise, there are numerous products on the market at your disposal for all types of cleaning needs. There are also plenty of natural methods, too. You can tackle almost any chore with many unexpected household items:

Lemon. Lemon’s acidity makes for a great dirt and stain fighter. For pesky cutting board, dish, food container, and even laundry stains, adding lemon and letting it sit for 20 minutes or so can combat even the most hopeless stains.

Liquid Castile Soap. Its plant base is gentler than conventional cleaners which lessens dulling surfaces, but is still tough with grime, grease and dirt build-up! Mix Castile soap with water to mop floors, clean countertops, stovetops, sinks and showers. You can even clean leather upholstery with Castile soap.

Vinegar. Vinegar fights against bacteria, mildew and mold. Disinfect your coffeemaker, drains, dishwasher, and showerheads with vinegar. It’s also great for cleaning windows when mixed with water and Castile soap.

Toothpaste. Just your standard toothpaste, no special whitening or tartar control formulas. Great for tarnished silverware and chrome appliances. A little elbow grease and a small dab of toothpaste will clean faucets, linoleum, and even your steam iron.

Baking Soda. Baking soda is a natural deodorizer. Use it in your refrigerator, trash cans, and other odor-prone places to freshen your space. A sprinkle in those tried and true gym sneakers wouldn’t hurt either.

Whether it’s committing to purchasing green cleaning products or creating your own natural solutions, making the switch to green cleaning can be a super simple transition, and one that’s good for your family and the environment.
