The original Le Pain Quotidien in New York, this store is where our founder Alain Coumont set up shop after taking a leap of faith to introduce his Belgian concept to the United States in 1997. Once he settled on this space, Alain spent countless nights in the basement baking his traditional loaves and pastries to meet the interest of his new guests. Today Madison serves as a test ground for our menu innovation, featuring our newest botanical tartines and salads before the rest of New York tastes them. A block away from Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this location is the perfect place for a relaxing weekend brunch or post-museum meal.
Simplicity According to Alain
Our founderAlain Coumont was born into a family of cooks. His grandparents had a restaurant, his father was a chef, and his aunt Simone was a talented pâtissier who baked tarts every Saturday for the whole family to devour on Sunday. When he was 6 years old, Alain began reading from the two cookbooks on the shelf at home. He taught himself to cook by reading recipes and hints from famous chefs.
